The Jersey Law Review - February 2002
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Sir,
HALDANE’S PRISON BOARD ‘NOTES’
I am writing about your most welcome, because long overdue, re-printing of Haldane’s Prison Board ‘Notes of proposed arguments’. I have noticed (and I do not expect I am the first to do so) two places at which Haldane’s text has been corrupted.
First, on page 257 of the Review, Blackstone’s comment on the dispensing power does not make sense as reproduced. It reads:
"The doctrine of non obstante abdicated the Kingdom".
Haldane wrote, quoting Blackstone almost exactly:
‘Blackstone ... says...-
"The doctrine of non obstante abdicated Westminster Hall when King James abdicated the Kingdom"’
Secondly, at the foot of page 260 (three lines up), ‘affected’ should be ‘affecting’. Most readers will probably guess this, but when I first read it I wondered whether something had been left out here too.
Yours faithfully,
J. G. LE QUESNE
